Another dedicated believer in "State steering" is the bungling Dr Sibusiso Bengu, Education Minister. In his wisdom, he has given retirement packages to tens of thousands of trained and talented White teachers, when the national need for their service is glaringly obvious. He is now busy trying to introduce the outdated, hugely politicised Outcomes Based Education system, this at a time when his department is unable even to deliver textbooks to primary schools. You will not be surprised that in the years of his tenure, private schools have increased from 93 to some 550. To the ANCs shame, SAs education programme, so recently the best in Africa, today lags behind many West African states. Unbelievably the SABC, 23.6.98, carried a lengthy interview with COSATU sec-gen, Sam Shilowa, a former security guard and only semi-literate, on his prescription for solving our educational crisis. Another indication of how desperate the ANC is to reach accommodation with the unionists. |
SUMMING UP: The ANC says it wants a two-third majority in the 1999 election, so that they can form a government "unfettered by restraints." On their established record, that can only be viewed as extremely sinister. For most Whites, Coloureds and Asians - and great numbers of Blacks, including Zulus - ANC-style "democracy has a very intimidating and nervous feel about it." If we are to curb their excesses, then our joint aim should be to limit their vote to under 50% next year. With the economy in free fall and unemployment going through the stratosphere, I believe that, if we put our minds to it, we could indeed do just that. |
